Auckland Maritime Museum Experience

This Wednesday the 18th of March 2015 the Extension group were given an opportunity to experience the crew of Hikianalia. This is the Malama Honua worldwide voyage, this means "to care for our earth".

First we met Frazer he was one of our instructors, we then met Miki. Miki is apart of the Hikianalia crew.  We started our day of by getting into groups. Each group then went to different activities. One group went to the Star Compass activity, Peace flags and the tour of Hikianalia.

Our first activity was the Peace Flag activity . We had to write our thoughts and draw pictures of what we care about. We had to draw and write these things on a piece of material. You could draw our world, Plants, Love, Family and more. Our messages and drawings were then sewn together quilt. When they go to another country they will give it to another school.

Our next activity was the tour on the Hikianalia. We were split into groups of 5/6. Each group went to a different place on the Waka.  The first thing we did was put life jackets on. We then went to a different part of the Waka. We got to the part of the waka where they put the sales up, we got to put the sale up. We also got to see the Control room, where they sleep, toilet and kitchen area.

The last activity we did was the Star Compass. The person who was telling us about the Compass was Kalepa Baybayan, he is 1 of 4 people in the world to know how to use a Star Compass. He taught us some words and actions, these actions and words are the different directions. The directions were East, West, South, North and more. This is what you call  traditional navigation.

After our last activity we had lunch. Once we finished our lunch we had to lock our bags away. We said our goodbyes, it was time to go. Iisa then said a speech to the instructors.
Then we got to look around the rest of the museum. I really enjoyed meeting the crew of Malama Honua, Hikianalia. After that we went to Silo park to wait for our bus. The bus arrived and we went back to school.

  1. Hi Venetia

I was taking a look at some posts about Malama Honua and our visit earlier in the year to the Maritime Museum. Well done you for writing a great post to summarise our trip. I love how you have added photos as well.
